Chocolate is deadly in certain quantities and to some dogs any quantity will be deadly. And the only way to know if it’s deadly to your dog is to try it (obviously a horrible thought). Garlic is fine in small quantities with an emphasis on small. Onions kill red blood cells which can cause death from anemia. I can’t imagine a book being out there that would be so ignorant. But then they used to think tomato’s were poisonous and that smoking tobacco was good for you. Below is a chart detailing the different amounts of chocolate which are deadly.
White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers’ chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

Well chocolate is toxic to dogs and the vets says so are onion, but the vet also said that garlic in small amounts would be fine. I don’t know about getting rid of fleas.

I already posted that I use garlic in small amounts. There are many things that are toxic if given in a large enough quantity.
You might find the site below useful.
But – nobody here is an expert – just yahoo groups who pretend we are. LOL

A few M&Ms killed my precious pug. Onions have recently been proven to cause anemia in dogs, and garlic is dangerous in large quantities, but there is evidence that it helps repel fleas.
Grapes and raisins have been found to cause kidney failure..that one is a fairly new finding, but well founded..

Chocolate can kill your dog. If you are having problems with fleas my suggestion would be to use tea tree oil shampoo. I kid you not fleas hate the stuff. My neighbor’s dogs were infested with fleas. After she washed one dog with flea shampoo she didn’t have enough for the second dog. I gave her some tea tree oil shampoo and you should have seen the shower wall. It was unbelievable how many fleas were on that poor dog. Afterwards the dog treated with the flea shampoo was scratching in no time. The dog with the tea tree shampoo it took her quite a while before she started scratching again. My neighbor then started using the tea tree shampoo and her problem was gone in no time. I can say my dog has never had one flea either.

Garlic at high doses is just as toxic as onions… they cause a type of anemia that can be fatal. Chocolate is definitely toxic to dogs – 1 oz per pound of body weight in milk chocolate, 1 oz per 3 pounds of body weight in dark chocolate, and 1 oz per 9 pounds of body weight in baking chocolate… the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. And yes, grapes and raisins are toxic too, they cause kidney failure (just like antifreeze).

I work at a vet clinic. Chocolate, onions, grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs. Chocolate is the worst, followed by raisins, onions then grapes. Garlic and brewers yeast will not get rid of fleas. At best it might help repel them in area where they are not many to worry about, but not nearly as effectively as Advantage or Revolution.
