Benedryl For Cats As A Sedative? ?

Okay so here is the deal my cat, Oscar will NOT let me sleep at night and hasn’t let me for quite sometime. I’ve tried everything, feeding him more, playing with him all night to wear him out and he still wakes us up 2 and 3 times a night. He does this by waking the other cat up and playing with him (on noisy hardwood floors) I assume he gets bored , the other cat would sleep peacefully if it were not for Oscar disturbing him. We can’t take it anymore we love Oscar but this is driving us crazy. I read in one of my pet home remedy books that Benedryl makes a good sedative for cats at a rate of 1 milligram a pound. I don’t want to hurt him and I’ve given benedryl to dogs before for allergies and it’s never been a problem but I’ve never given it to a cat and for the use of a sedative. can anyone out there tell me if this is going to cause any problems with him or hurt him in anyway? or if they have ever done this before?

please, do not ever prescribe human medicine to nonhuman animals. there are some medications which carry over and haven’t caused harm to nonhuman animals but it’s too risky a thing to determine yourself. please, speak with your vet about the problem, you might end up killing this cat if you make a mistake.

My parents have a night owl for a cat as well. She decided to keep him in the laundry room at night to give her and my father some rest. It is routine now and she lets him out in the morning. He does have food and a litter box in there.
That might be an alternative, I guess it would be similar to crating a dog.

    I wouldn’t do this.
I would take him and put him in another room.
Or (I know some don’t like this) spank him (1) and tell him NO
OR use a squirt bottle to persuade him not to do it.
Is his neutered? This also will calm him
he may just be young and if so he will grow out of it.
    good luck

Giving benadryl to a cat every night could cause serious damage. it should only be used as a last choice for cats that are sick. they make these wall plug ins that send out a smell that makes cats calm and sleepy, use that, NOT BENADRYL. also ask your vet for more options. good luck!

Nooo..it’s not ok to give your cat Benedryl! Please don’t drug your kitty! He is just being a cat. Try putting him in another room with his food and litter box and some toys to keep him entertained..at least you will get rest and so will your other cat.

It’s fine to give your cat benedryl, just make sure you only give him a half of pill, crunch it up, and put it in his food. he’ll never know.

NO NO NO – never give cats human medicine unless you’ve checked with your vet. Many of them have bad effects and possible death to a cat.

It’s fine to give a cat benadryl for the purpose of helping with allergies, but ONLY under the supervision of a vet and definitely not for the long term. Cats are nocturnal creatures. They like to be awake at night and some are more active than others. Late night bursts of energy are just part of having a cat. Honestly, I don’t often recommend it, but you might consider re-homing Oscar if you can’t handle his late night activity. I don’t think it’s a good idea to drug a cat to have them behave in a manner that opposes their nature as a matter of convenience.
